Robert Pattinson is among the favourites to replace Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, it's been reported.

Tobey, who played action hero and his alter-ego Peter Parker in three films, announced his departure earlier this week.

He said he had enjoyed starring as the comic book hero but that it was time to move on.

"Beyond the films themselves, I have formed some deep and lasting friendships,” he said. “I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story."

His decision to bow out has led to speculation over who should replace the actor, with Twilight star Rob emerging as a potential candidate.

The 23-year-old British actor's current schedule includes Bel Ami, which begins shooting in February, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

However, Rob faces competition for the role from Michael Cera, according to the Daily Record.

Meanwhile, Sam Raimi, who directed the first three Spider-Man films, has also quit the franchise.

At present, it's not clear when Spider-Man 4 is due to be released.
